'Chaitra' is the lunar month in Hindu calendar which has the purnimaa or full moon day linked with Chitraa Nakshyatra. It is the second and last month of 'Basant ritu' or spring season. It succeeds to Falguna and precedes to the month of 'Baisakha'. The month begins with the new moon in March/April and is the first month of the Hindu year.

A brightly shining singular star, Chitra reveals the general characteristics of creation. It conduces the essence of heat, pressure and force- the necessary antecedents of creation. Chaitra being associated with Chitra Nakshyatra is considered to be the auspicious month, in which the creation of the universe was started. Chaitra purnima day is known as 'Yugadi' in southern parts of India. It is two words Yug and adi joined together, meaning beginning of a Yuga. As per legend, lord Brahma created the universe on Yugadi. The nine day long spring festival of Vasanta Navratri (Chaitra Navratri) begins on this day and concludes on Ram Navami.
